about
This track is about a thing that actually happened to my mum and me - it all happened in a split second and my mum saw more than I did, but I'll never forget the sound of they guy's head cracking against the wall and seeing him slide down onto the footpath. The security guard one metre away did nothing while the culprits sprinted away, meanwhile the victim's mate just kept saying over and over "That's my brother-in-law, that's my brother-in-law..."
The song is straight up a criticism of men's violence and of hypermasculinity, which showed its face in this instance as proud, scared and cowardly.
If you're a man and you think you need to smash someone's face in to prove it, congratulations, you're a coward now, well done.
lyrics
We left the theatre, me and mum
And started walking to the car
The actors so perfectly cast
And all the sets so smartly done
When 'cross the pavement swerved a man with rage across his chest
Took his hand and wrapped it round a nearby rival's throat
And smashed his head into the wall, he crumpled to the floor
A perfect show of how it's meant to be
Now tell me what is modern man
If he can't throw his weight around
And choke another dude and bash
His skull until his body falls
Then run around the corner fast as you can surely run
No self-control/responsibility, only a fist
Straight to the face of anyone who disagrees with you
Congratulations, you're a coward now
Well done
