about

This is a track that just came out of nowhere when I was mucking around on my guitar one time. It's related to a strong personal sentiment of mine that I'm just not really into the idea of getting married, spending heaps of time and money on something that's kind of inconsequential to me when I've got so much on my mind already and it makes no difference as to how much I care about a partner. I don't begrudge or judge those who choose marriage - dedicating yourself to going through life with someone is an admirable thing! It's just not for me.

The whole wedding industry irks me, all the social expectations around weddings and the diamond ring and the white dress, they feel like hangovers from a bygone era but somehow they are still so embedded in our lives even though the meaning and purpose of marriage as an institution is so different. Women don't need the protection or financial support of men in the ways that they once did (thanks feminism!), and until recently people in same-sex partnerships were excluded from marrying each other because they didn't fit this outdated hetero model.

This song came from the point of view of a woman who has better things to do than marry a dude and is frankly getting a bit sick of his obsession with it. Mate, I'm already busy.

lyrics

You're a nice one, a good one you are so sweet
The kind of man I always thought I wanted to meet
So things have worked out more than okay
I guess I'm happy, it seems so perfect this way

We're hanging out yeah we're having heaps of fun
Don't ruin it by saying you think I'm the one
I've got so much stuff to do
What makes you think I only want to be with you?

Marry me (No!)
Marry me (No!)
Marry me (I'm already busy!)

Marry me (No!)
Marry me (No!)
Marry me (I'm already busy!)

I've got cakes to bake, songs to write and books to read
I won't say yes no matter how much you plead
You're not listening to a goddamn thing
What makes you think the only thing I want is a ring?

Marry me (No!)
Marry me (No!)
Marry me (I'm already busy!)

Marry me (No!)
Marry me (No!)
Marry me (I'm already busy!)

What do you think you will achieve by saying 'Oh please marry me'?
I will not acquiesce to your request
I will not wear a big white dress, oh no
I'll do what I want forever!

Marry me (No!)
Marry me (No!)
Marry me (I'm already busy!)

Marry me (No!)
Marry me (No!)
Marry me (I'm already busy!)

N-n-n-n-n-n-n-no!
